Hollywood Follies

First aired: 10/15/94

Directed by: Michael Schultz

The only episode to utilize locations in southern California, much of this feature-length episode was filmed around Fillmore and Santa Barbara, CA.

An excerpt from George Lucas: The Creative Impulse:

“The team, shooting in nearby Fillmore when the devastating Northridge earthquake hit in 1994, worked footage of a major aftershock into the story.”

Indy is joined by Gershwin (Tom Beckett) as he watches a film in Wilmington's Thalian Hall at 310 Chestnut Street. It was used again as a movie theater in one of the "Old Indy" bookends.

The New York skyscraper housing the Universal Pictures offices was actually a digital blend of the entrance from an unknown building and the impressive 28-story 1929 Shell Building in San Francisco, located at 100 Bush Street (thanks to Collin)

The interior of the building was filmed in the main staircase and Hieronymus Lounge in Kerrwood Hall at Westmont College at 955 La Paz Road in Montecito, CA (thanks to Erik)

The train at the beginning of the episode was filmed on the now-defunct New Georgia Railroad. The steam engine is the Atlanta & West Point #290, now being restored at the Southwestern Railway Museum at 3595 Peachtree Road in Duluth, GA.

Indy arrives in Los Angeles at the Santa Barbara train station at 209 State Street. This is the view from the rear/track side (the second story was removed with a matte painting).

The actual front of the station is shown when Indy steps outside to catch a taxi to the studio.

Indy takes a taxi ride through Hollywood in this digitally-composited stock footage shot from 1975's "The Day of the Locust." The view looks south toward the 1928 Fontenoy apartment building from the north end of Whitley Avenue (thanks to Collin)

GPS Coordinates:

The exterior entrance of Universal Studios is actually the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History at 2559 Puesta Del Sol in Santa Barbara (with some digital additions)(thanks to Collin!). The "Administration Building" (actually the museum's entrance) was also given a 2nd story.

A young Irving Thalberg (Bill Cusack) gives Indy a tour of the studios' back lot alongside a warehouse on Sespe Avenue in Fillmore. This was supposed to be the location of Stages 2 & 3 of Universal Studios. This same area is seen several more times in the episode. The scenic shops across the street (what looks like just a storage shed) have since been demolished and replaced with a new fire station.

It appears that the actual interior of the warehouse was used for the inside of the sound stage. Notice Indy and Irving walking past the "Royal Garden Club" sign from Mystery of the Blues!

Exteriors of Von Stroheim's luxurious mansion were filmed at the Dieterich Estate, otherwise known as "Casa Bienvenida" - built in the 1930s by famed architect Addison Mizner in Montecito, CA. Sadly, it is privately owned and cannot be visited by the public.

Von Stoheim's pool was shot in the privately-owned Sand Point Villa at 871 Sand Point Road in Carpinteria, CA (thanks to Collin for the tip!)

This shot shows the west entrance of the Marilyn Horne Main House at the Music Academy of the West at 1070 Fairway Road in Santa Barbara (thanks to Erik).  This location is not open to the public.

The dance scene where they abduct the prince was filmed inside Lehmann Hall at the Music Academy of the West (thanks to Erik)

"Hollywood Hannah's" roadside diner, where Indy & Claire meetup after crossing back over the border, is actually the Washoe House in Petaluma, CA.

Address:

2840 Roblar Rd, Petaluma, CA 94952

Judging by the windows in the studio administration office, this scene was also likely shot inside the same warehouse building on Sespe Avenue (or faithfully recreated in a studio set).

The "Foolish Wives" sound stage was filmed at the Limoneira Company at 1141 Cummings Road in Santa Paula. More information is available in the blog post.
