Northern Italy 1918 (Tales of Innocence)

This episode was actually filmed on location in northern Italy. 

An excerpt from George Lucas: The Creative Impulse:

“Shooting in the Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy, the company barely missed being buried beneath a late-season avalanche.”

The episode opens with several shots of mountains in the Dolomites. This is the 2, 617m tower Toblin, located in Tre Cime Natural Park. Rifigio Antonio Locatelli is seen at the base.

During WWI, many tunnels were carved through the Dolomites as the Italians & Austrians fought over the mountains. Many of the tunnels and trenches still remain, and can be explored by courageous adventurers! Filming was done in the Tre Cime Natural Park in Italy. The entrance to the underground German bunker was filmed on the east face of Cima Piccola, which is the peak the furthest to the right in the below picture.  Check out this blog post for more info on this location.

The Italian town was filmed in Feltre, Italy. The town square where Indy buys flowers is the Piazza Maggiore in front of the Church of St. Roch. The tower of the Castle of Alboin is in the distance.

Back in the Piazza Maggiore in Feltre.

The field overlooking the town was to the east of Piazza Maggiore. The tower is part of the Castle of Alboin, remains of the original Roman fortifications of the town.

The spot where Indy & Ernie are bombarded is at the ghost houses at the border between the municipalities Sospirolo and Gosaldo in the Dolomite National Park in Italy.

After the bombing, Indy and Ernest are cared for at the Sanctuary and Convent of the Holy Martyrs Victor and Corona (Santuario Santi Vittore e Corona), located 4 kilometers southeast of the town of Feltre.
