The "hero" tank at Disney's Hollywood Studios

The tank in the film was based on the Mark VII/Mark VIII tanks from WWI, which were designed to be built jointly by the British and U.S.. These tanks are so rare that the producers opted to build one for the film. Ultimately, 2 tanks were built - a full-scale functioning tank and just the top portion - a "process" tank that could be pulled on a trailer behind a truck. The process tank was used for the close-up shots of Indy fighting on top of the tank. Tank interiors were a small set at Elstree.

Both tanks built by the production are owned by Disney and reside at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL. The "hero" tank (pictured first above) currently sits outside the "Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular." The process tank is no longer on public display.

The Bovington Tank Museum in England has the largest selection of World War I tanks anywhere in the world - including a very-similar Mark VIII (pictured above).

The exterior of the grail temple and the canyon leading to it was filmed at Petra, Jordan.

All interiors in the temple were done at Elstree Studios. The main antechamber was built elevated above the stage floor and mounted on gimbals to simulate the earthquake effect.

The ride off into the sunset was filmed by a 2nd unit crew on the Figure 3 Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.
