German East Africa 1916 (Oganga the Giver & Taker of Life)

First aired: 4/1/92

Directed by: Simon Wincer

An excerpt from George Lucas: The Creative Impulse:

“The unusually beautiful and thoughtful film was shot in the Congo. In the most dramatic of the incidents to occur during filming, a boat sailing in a river near the Somalia border struck a sandbar and capsized, throwing the whole cast, including one hundred extras, in to crocodile-infested waters. The crocodiles were evidently started away, and there was not a single injury.”

The coastal town of "Port Gentil" was filmed in Lamu, Kenya - also where the cast & crew stayed during filming.

Schweitzer's camp was filmed somewhere on the banks of the Tana River in Kenya, near the Somalia border. The film crew built the village specifically for filming.

The fort at Port Gentil is the Lamu Fort, dating back to the 1820s. Today it is open as a museum
