Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade (1989) Filming Locations

Compared with the previous film, Last Crusade actually filmed at a variety of scenic locations around the world.

The entire opening sequence was filmed in Arches National Park in Utah.

The tower seen in the opening shot is part of the "Courthouse Towers" at Arches.

"The Organ."

"Balanced Rock."

"The Three Gossips."

Young Indy and the other Boy Scouts dismount and explore under Double Arch. This is where Indy finds the entrance to the cave. The cave interior was a set created at Elstree Studios.

The circus train sequence was filmed along the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM. For this sequence, the Denver & Rio Grande #484 steam engine was repainted as the fictional "Pueblo & Chama Railroad."

The car chase & horse transfer shots were filmed just south of Antonito, where a county road parallels the railroad. Since it was visible in the shots, the film crew had to cover it with dirt and brush to hide it but the fence that runs alongside it can still be seen.

I believe this portion is near "Windy Point" in Colorado.

For the water spout swing stunt, a special water tower was built by the film crew to replace an existing one next to a historic sheep ranch in Lobato. It still stands today and can be seen along the route, near the Lobato trestle. A depot was constructed on this same site for the 1969 film "The Good Guys and the Bad Guys."

This behind-the-scenes shot of George Lucas appears to be on a siding at Cumbres Pass near where it crosses State Highway 17

Interior train car scenes were shot on sets at Universal Studios Hollywood - except the caboose, which was actually built by the film crew on a flatcar and towed by the C&T RR to achieve the "trapdoor" gag in one seamless shot.

Indy runs east on East 5th Avenue across the railroad tracks in Antonito...

...and arrives at his home at 502 Front Street. The best news of all? The actual house is now being operated as a bed and breakfast called "Indiana Jones Home!"

The scene aboard the Coronado was filmed in a soundstage at Elstree, using a set built on gimbals.

This time, "Barnett College" exterior shots were actually done at the same place as the interiors - back at Rickmansworth Masonic School in Hertfordshire, England.

Indy's classroom was the same one used for Raiders.

The exterior shot of Henry Jones Sr's house is 3 Wills Grove, in the Mill Hill area of London (thanks to Jeremiah for tracking this one down!). Interiors were done at Elstree Studios.

The very quick scene of Indy boarding Donovan's plane is at North Weald Airfield in England. This was also used in HBO's Band of Brothers. The DC-3 is now on display at Coventry Airport in Coventry, England.

Indy and Marcus meet Elsa outside the Basilica of St. Mary of Health in Venice - looking across the channel toward the tower at St. Mark's.

Indy, Elsa and Marcus are seen walking down Fondamenta del Squero and cross over Rio San Barnaba on Ponte dei Pugni
