“The film was nearly 3 years in production, with shooting not only in Turkey, but also in Prague, Kenya, North Carolina, and Arizona, whenever the cast principals could be reassembled for additional scenes. It was at times a dangerous experience, with death threats from the Islamic Jihad in Turkey and war tensions on the Iraqi border.”
Much of the film was lifted from another Simon Wincer film, The Lighthorsemen (which actually stars some of the same actors). In fact, it's likely they wrote this episode solely around the availability of this footage.
