Mexico 1916 (Spring Break Adventure)

First aired: 3/4/92

Directed by: Carl Schultz

The filming for this episode took place in Almeria, Spain. An excerpt from George Lucas: The Creative Impulse:

Much of the film was shot in 130-degree weather in Spain, on locations used in Lawrence of Arabia.”

A quick bridging sequence features the now-defunct New Georgia Railroad, led by Savannah & Atlanta #750. This engine is now on permanent display at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia. I believe these were unused shots for Biloxi Blues, and reused again in later episodes.

The New Mexico train depot was filmed in a small outbuilding at La Purisima Mission in Lompoc, CA.

The border town of "Columbus" was filmed at Fort Bravo Cinema Studios/Texas Hollywood film set in Almeria, Spain. This was built in the 1960's and has been featured in numerous famous westerns (The Good The Bad & The Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars). This particular street is named "Texas Street."

The horse chase scene was possibly filmed on Rambla de Tabernas, the road to the Fort Bravo set outside Tabernas, Spain (thanks to Juan)

Pancho's camp & the army camp were located in an area known as Las Salinas or Las Lomillas outside Tabernas, Spain (thanks to Juan). This area is well known for its use in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Lawrence of Arabia and The Rope and the Cult. It appears the stone wall seen in the above shot still remains.

The American army camp was also shot at Las Salinas/Las Lomillas.  The particular area used in these scenes also appears at the climax of the tank chase sequence in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

The steam locomotive used by Pancho Villa's troops was the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico (National Railway of Mexico) #1150, now on display at the National Museum of Mexican Railroads in Puebla, Mexico. The engine was never actually filmed for the show, instead the footage was borrowed from the 1989 film "Old Gringo," starring Jimmy Smits, Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck.

The Mexican town where Pancho and his gang stage an attack was also shot at Fort Bravo. This area is called "Mexican Street."

Screenshots from "Old Gringo"

However, much of this scene was taken directly from Old Gringo, which was actually filmed in Mexico - including the main set piece of the train crashing through the stone wall and much of the fighting inside. It even appears as though the main characters in Young Indy were dressed to match characters in Old Gringo so the two could be intercut seamlessly.

Mexican Street at Fort Bravo was also the location of the cantina where Indy runs into Patton (thanks to Juan).

Demetrios' hideout was filmed on the "New Frontier" film set near Gergal, Almeria (thanks to Juan). This set was also used in the 1973 film Chino, starring Charles Bronson. Sadly the set has fallen into disuse and today is virtually a pile of rubble. The blog Almeria 1980 features several photos of the set shortly after Young Indy filmed there (scroll to the bottom of the page). More photos of the set.
