Information about this bayonet
This bayonet has a typical Collins style long hilt. The smooth ribbed brass hilt is 124 mm long and has 14 ribs. The muzzle ring is flush to the hilt flat and the inside diameter is 22.6 mm. There is a forward swept round finial on the bottom of the guard and no finial on top of the muzzle ring. The press stud and spring are typical Collins construction. There is a steel rivet in the center of the cross guard. A hand guard made of rolled sheet sheeting has been added to the bottom of the grip. It is not known if this is a period addition or sometime more recently added.

The lug slot is chamfered around the top edge and there is no guide slot.

The only example recorded has a two digit number stamped in a small font on the top of the muzzle ring.

A Collins Logo #1 is stamped on the left side ricasso and the right side ricasso is dated 1861.

The yataghan blade is 495 mm long and has unstopped fullers.

Speculation and questions
The hand guard was clearly added after the hilt was cast and appears to have been soldiered to the hilt. The question of when it was added and by whom may never be answered without finding additional information about it.

This bayonet is numbered 32 on top of the muzzle ring in small numbers. The left side of the blade is stamped with a Collins' logo and the right side is dated 1861.
