Information about this scabbard type
This scabbard type has a black lacquered leather body with exterior sheet brass mounts and the leather body is curved to match the curvature of the blade.
The tip mount has an oval brass cap brazed to the end of the mount. The leather side of both the throat and tip mounts have outwardly curved edges that protrudes over the leather body.
This scabbard type was made in the early1860's for the bayonets produced by private contractors like Collins & Company.
Scabbard Type Variations
This very long narrow scabbard was made for the US Model 1841 Colt Alteration bayonet. Its length of 670 millimeters makes it easy to identify.
This scabbard is very similar to Variation A other than the length, approximatly 535 millimeters. It is typically found on the numerous small bladed bayonets produced by Collins & Company during the US Civil War.
This scabbard was made for the US Model 1862 Remington (Zouave) bayonet. It is nearly identical to Variation B, except for a small single letter stamped on the center of the frog stud and a slightly different pattern to the curved edges of the throat and tip mounts.
