George Moller, American Military Shoulder Arms, shows that Colt purchased from the US Ordnance Department approximately 11,500 Model 1841 rifles to be altered to accept sword bayonets, to add a three leaf rear sight and to ream and re-rifle the bores to .58 caliber. Records show that between November 1861 and June 1862, 10,411 rifles were delivered to the Ordnance Department. The projecting bayonet stud is integral with a .5 inch (12.7 millimeters) wide, convex-surfaced split ring that encircles the barrel 3.5 inches (89 millimeters) behind the muzzle. The stud is located on the right side of the barrel and the ring is secured by a vertical screw through the split lug on the left side.
Colt also sold at least 468 rifles with the ring-type bayonet stud installed, plus 400 additional ring-type bayonet studs to modify additional rifles to the State of Connecticut.
