Information about this scabbard
This rare scabbard has brass throat and tip mounts with inwardly curved edges away from the black leather body. The reverse of the Type 4 bayonets. They are made with curved black lacquered leather bodies with sheet brass mounts. Both throat and tip mounts are held to the leather with four large brass rivets. One on the front and back of the brass mounts at the apex of the scalloped edges and one on each side.
The frog stud is a 16 millimeter wide domed brass stud, brazed to the right side of the throat mount. The throat edges are bent inwardly and the opening is in the shape of a blade.
The tip finial, an oval and some what flattened brass cap, is brazed over the tip mount body.
The throat mount is 73 millimeters long and 37 millimeters wide. The scabbard pictured is in relic condition and it is missing the lower half of the scabbard.
Information from other sources
Hardin, The American Bayonet 1776 - 1964, #120, shows an example of this scabbard with an unknown bayonet. Which Is currently believed to be Colt M1855 Revolving Rifle bayonet Type 4. Hardin states "It is 20.875 inches (530 mm) long overall. The body is of brown leather and the mountings of brass. The flat nosed tip is 3.25 inches (83 mm) long and 1.0625 inches (27 mm) wide. Each side is scalloped inwardly. The end cap fits over the tip proper. The tip is held to the body by a single brass rivet on each side at the scallop hollow, as well as one in the edge and back surfaces at the scallop flare. The throat is 3 inches (76 mm) long and 1.375 inches (35 mm) wide. It is scalloped and riveted to the body the same manner as the tip. A heavy, round, squat-domed frog button is centered in the obverse side of the throat."

Sutherland & Wilson, The Book of Colt Firearms, page 196, B, shows an example of this scabbard with a Colt Revolving Rifle bayonet.
Speculation and questions
The example pictured was found with what is believed to be a musician's bayonet for the US Model 1841 Colt Alteration Rifle and it may or may not be original to the bayonet. Albert Hardin shows this scabbard with a different unknown bayonet and states that the leather is brown. Two variations? The Colt Model 1855 Revolving Rifle connection from "Information from other sources" above is interesting but inconclusive.
The rarity of this scabbard is very high and without more information everything is just speculation.
