This lever action repeating rifle was made by the Evans Rifle Manufacturing Company of Mechanic Falls, Maine between 1873 and 1879. It is believed that about 3000 were made for the military market and sold to Turkey, Russia and possibly others. Apparently, some of these military muskets were designed to accept a socket bayonet and some were designed to except a brass hilted sword bayonet. The number designed for just the sword bayonet is unknown.
An advertisement published for the Evans Rifle found on https://www.gunboards.com/threads/evans-bayonet.452729/ shows a drawn picture of the Military Musket with both socket and sword bayonets below the musket. Clearly the sword bayonet has a ribbed brass hilt similar to those listed in this study.
Muskets with a sword bayonet lug and guide bar located on the right side of the barrel just behind the muzzle do exist and currently two variations have been observed. The difference between these two variations is in the base of the bayonet lug where it is attached to the musket.
The first variation has an enlarged base that curves to fit the barrel curvature thus requiring the edges of the lug slot on the bayonet to be chamfered.
The following Evan's carbine images and dimensions of a first variation stud and guide has been supplied by Shawn Gibson and Jason Kaplan. Note the tapered width of the guide bar as measured in the third photograph.
The second variation does not have any base to the lug thus the bayonet lug slot edges are without chamfering.
The actual diameter of the musket's muzzle is still uncertain but believed to be slightly larger than 18 millimeters. But, both muskets and carbines were produced as well as different cartridges, .44 Evans and .44-40. There may be differences in the muzzle diameter as well.
Actual details of the bayonet for this variation is currently uncertain but may be similar to Reference #308.
The similarities of the bayonets produced for the Remington, Whitney and Evans muskets are similar and absolute identification is difficult. The associated bayonet variations listed below are only possibilities for this musket.
