It is believed that this black leather frog was made for the Whitney Model 1861 Navy Rifle Bayonet.

In a large oval, "NAVY YARD * PHIL'A * 1863" is impressed into the front side of the leather strap just above the bayonet pocket.  No other markings have been identified.
