Whitney "Good & Serviceable"
Model 1841 Derivative Rifle Bayonet
Type 1B
Information about this bayonet
This bayonet has a typical Ames hilt type #1. The smooth ribbed brass hilt is 122 mm long and has 16 ribs. The muzzle ring is flush to the hilt flat and the inside diameter is 22.7 mm. There is a forward swept round finial on the bottom of the guard and no finial on top of the muzzle ring. The press stud and 41 mm long spring are typical Ames construction.
The lug slot is chamfered around the top edge and has a 25.4 mm guide slot. There is no blade rivet in the center of the cross guard. So far, the observed examples have been serial numbered on the hilt flat.

It has an early style Ames blade with stopped fullers that are similar to what is found on the Model 1841 Type II Ames bayonets, except that the ricasso is noticeably wider than the Model 1841 Type II and the edges of the fuller stop are not as straight and crisp as found on the Model 1841 Type II. Currently, this blade configuration appears to be unique to this bayonet.
The large yataghan blade is 565 mm long, 30.4 mm wide, 8.5 mm thick and the ricasso is 12.8 mm long. The left ricasso is stamped AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS (Ames Logo #5) and the right ricasso is dated 1860.

Information from other sources
Rollin Davis, US Sword Bayonets 1847 – 1865, claims that Ames made a bayonet with the same dimensions as the Ames Model 1841 Type II bayonet but without the finial on top of the muzzle ring. It was marked AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS on the left ricasso and dated 1860 on the right.
Speculation and questions
There are two other bayonets that are very similar to this one. First, the Whitney Model 1841 Derivative Rifle Bayonet-Type 1A which is near identical except for the width of the ricasso and lack of markings. Second, the Whitney Short Enfield Derivative Rifle Bayonet-Type 1 which is near identical except for the width of the ricasso, muzzle ring diameter, lack of a guide slot and Whitney style marking found on the muzzle ring. Together, these three bayonets support the belief that they were made for Whitney by Ames Manufacturing prior to the start of the Civil War. Clearly they were made by Ames Mfg using an early style blade. One is dated 1860 which fits the period. Plus the muzzle ring diameters and lug slots fit the needs for the Whitney Rifles.
Labeling it as a Whitney bayonet is still questionable. It could be a surplus blade used on a later war time Model 1841 alteration such as the Massachusetts or Maine alterations. It also may be for a yet unidentified alteration contract given to Ames during the pre-war period.
