Fayetteville Arsenal
Brief History
The United States government built the Fayetteville Arsenal in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1838. At the beginning of the US Civil War, the arsenal was surrendered to the State of North Carolina without incident. Federal forces vacated the arsenal on April 27, 1861. On October 1861, arms producing machinery captured at the Harpers Fairy Arsenal was installed and the arsenal became a major supplier of small arms to the Confederate forces. Rifles, swords, bayonets, cartridges and larger ordnance were produced. Many of the workman were from the Harpers Fairy Arsenal who had relocated to Fayetteville. At its peek, over 500 rifles were produced per month.
On March 11, 1865, the union army lead by Major General William T. Sherman, captured the arsenal and it was razed to the ground.
