Information about this scabbard type
This scabbard type has a black leather body with brass mounts and is very similar to Scabbard Type 3. The main differences are the shield shaped frog stud and the lack of rivets attaching the mounts to the leather body. There are parallel lines on both the front and back side of the scabbard that run the length of the body. The leather bodies of the observed examples are curved to match the blade's shape.
It is believed that this scabbard type was either made locally by the Confederacy or was purchased from an outside source by the Confederacy. They should date to the early 1860's.
