This side-by-side shot shows the similarities between this bayonet and the Turkish Model 1874 bayonet. Both bayonets are interchangeable on the Peabody Martini Type B Rifle.
The large yataghan blade is 576 millimeters long and has unstopped fullers.
Information from other sources
Edward Hull, "Peabody Firearms, Plate25-7, Hull states that the observed brass hilted bayonets have a style of fish-scale grip that was commonly used by the Ames Manufacturing Company on bayonets it manufactured in the 1880 period and a blade style that is identical to the Peabody Martini Model 1874 sword bayonet. The purpose for which Ames made these bayonets is unknown; they may have merely been samples of what could be made, for use on either the Peabody Martini or Martini Henry rifle.
See Unknown Peabody Martini Bayonet Type 1 for more details.
Speculation and questions
The connections to the Peabody Martini rifle and Ames Manufacturing Company are pretty strong but the purpose and numbers produced are still uncertain. If its purpose was for sales samples then the numbers produced would be very limited.

This bayonet is totally unmarked. The muzzle ring is 5.5 mm above the hilt flat. The steel mounted black leather scabbard appears to be a typical scabbard that is found on the Turkish Model 1874 Peabody Martini sword bayonet.
