Brass Hilted Sword Bayonets
Scabbard Type 5 - Variation C
Information about this scabbard
This Variation is made with straight black lacquered leather bodies with sheet brass mounts. The curved blade fits the straight scabbard without issue. Both throat and tip mounts are held to the leather with two very large brass rivets on each side. The curved edges on the throat and tip mounts are exaggerated to almost a point, making it easy to separated them from the Type 4 scabbards.
The frog stud is a 17 mm domed brass stud, brazed to the right side of the throat mount. The throat edges are bent inwardly and the opening is in the shape of a rectangle, allowing the blade to be inserted in either direction.
The tip finial is much smaller then the previous two variations. The oval and some what flattened brass cap is brazed over the tip mount body.
This scabbard has acceptance markings of a crown over a Gothic letter S on the backside of both throat and tip mounts.
The throat mounts are 66 mm long and 38 mm wide. The tip mount is 76 mm long and 28 mm wide. The overall length is approximately 535 mm long.

Speculation and questions
This scabbard was produced for the Winchester Model 1873 Bayonet. It has two lines tooled into the leather, running from throat to tip. One on either side of the front face of the scabbard. Both scabbard and bayonet have non US acceptance marks so the country it served with is unknown. The number produced is unknown. It is believed that the bayonet was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company but it is uncertain that Ames made the scabbard as well. There are just so many differences to other scabbards made by Ames during the period.
