The book, SHARPS FIREARMS The Percussion Era 1848-1865, is the source of almost all of the following details listed on this rifle.
It is believed that The Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company introduced the "New Model" 1859 Carbine in late 1858 changing from a "slant-breech" design to a "straight-breech" design. The first recorded New Model 1859 Rifle was produced for a US Navy contract issued on September 9th, 1959.
There are currently 5 identified contracts for the New Model 1859 Rifle with "Stud & Guide" for a saber bayonet.
The first contract for the New Model 1859 Military Rifle was from the US Navy for 900 rifles with sword bayonets that were delivered late 1860 and early 1861. Serial #s range in two groups, 33000 to 34000 and 37000 to 38000.

The US Army received 100 rifles with saber bayonets with a contract dated September 12, 1861. These rifles were surplus from the US Navy contact of 1859 that the Navy did not except. They were issued to a company of Illinois militia sharpshooters called the Sturgis Rifles, part of Major General George McClellan's headquarters bodyguard. Serial #s range from 37000 to 38000.

Open Market Purchases
The US Ordnance Department purchased New Model 1859 Rifles on the open market from contractors, middlemen and patriotic groups in 1861, 1862 and 1863. Five recorded purchases were made, 397 rifles from C.C. Bean, 668 rifles from Union Defense Committee of New York, 5 rifles from Tiffany & Co., 8 rifles from J.M. Chivington and 22 rifles from Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, for a total of 1100 rifles. Other open market purchases may exist, so the actual number is unknown. Serial numbers should range from 40000 to 45000.
The following four variations are candidates for these open market rifles.
