Albert N. Hardin, The American Bayonet 1776/1964
This model is distinctive among American made bayonets of the category due to the hilt materials. It has an iron hilt with wooden scales.
The straight blade with its characteristic upturned point has wide unstopped fullers. It is 21.75 inches (552 mm) long, 1.125 inches (28.6 mm) wide and .25 inch (6.4 mm) thick. The obverse ricasso is vertically stamped "GA. ARMORY" / "- 1862 -".
The iron guard, of the distinctive Enfield pattern, is narrow and straight. The upper guard terminates in a heavy disk finial which is plain and curves forward slightly. Its bore is .875 inch (22.2 mm) in diameter. The lower guard has a similarly curved but detailed disk finial. The guard is secured to the tang by a transverse steel pin. The long iron pommel is of the standard bird's-head pattern. The stud groove covers most of the upper surface of the pommel. The two piece wooden grips overlay the tang on all of its surfaces. While the upper surface of the grip remains without decoration, the sides and lower curved surfaces have a neat checkered pattern cut into them. The grips are secured by five transverse steel rivets through the tang. The upper surface of the grip is usually stamped with a serial number. All metal parts are polished bright and the smoothly sanded grips are varnished.
