Information about this bayonet
This bayonet has a typical Ames hilt type #1. The smooth ribbed brass hilt is 121 mm long and has 16 ribs. The muzzle ring is flush to the hilt flat and the inside diameter is 22.7 mm. There is a forward swept round finial on the bottom of the guard and no finial on top of the muzzle ring. The press stud and spring are typical Ames construction.

The lug slot is chamfered around the top edge and has a long guide slot probably in the 25 mm range. There is no blade rivet in the center of the cross guard. So far, the only observed example has been serial numbered on the hilt flat in a small font.
The only known example has an unusual round disk on the end of the pommel where the blade tang has been peened. It is unknown if this was done to tighten the original blade or to fasten a replacement blade. In either case it appears to have been done some time ago.

The left ricasso is stamped with the Ames' scroll logo #4.

Speculation and questions
It is currently believed that this bayonet is the same as that listed as the Ames Alteration for Massachusetts, with a loss of the blade tip and added disk to the pommel. The widely spaced serial # and muzzle ring diameter are a match, but more details on the lug slot is needed to be certain.

** The blade tip has been slightly rounded reducing the overall length and blade length.
The hilt flat of this bayonet is numbered 730 just in front of the guide slot in small numbers. The blade is rusty but an Ames logo #4 is visible on the left ricasso.
