This single strap brown (maybe black) leather frog was made to carry a bayonet or sword with a round or oval frog stud on the throat mount. It was found on a US Model 1841 New Hampshire Alteration Bayonet (ER# 1791) and appeared to have been together for some time.
The base of this frog is two pieces of leather that were cut to form and then single stitched along the edges to bind them together. The top section of the doubled leather was then folder over and stitched to form the belt loop. A separate piece of leather was bowed and passed through the top part of the base and riveted to form the pocket. A hole was cut into the pocket to accept the frog stud.
This frog is shaped like a spear point with the tip at the bottom and shaft at the top. It is heavily worn and in relic condition. It is 210 millimeters long and 70 millimeters wide.
This picture shows the scabbard and frog together before they were separated.
