There are multiple types of hilts made by Ames from 1847 to 1890.

Hilt Type #1
This style of hilt was used on most of Ames many bayonet variations produced, starting with the Sharps Model 1853 Carbine/Rifle bayonet. For future reference, this type will be referred to as the "STANDARD" Ames hilt type. For more details on the hilt style go to Identifying Features .
Hilt Type #2
This was an attempt to copy Harpers Ferry's Model 1841 Type II hilt and is only found on the Ames' version of the Model 1841 Type II. It was produced in 1855.
Hilt Type #3
This very unique hilt type was only used on the M1847 Sappers Musketoon. It was produced from 1847 to 1856.
Hilt Type #4
This unique hilt type was only used on the US M1870 Navy Rifles. It was produced from 1870 to 1871.
Hilt Type #5
This hilt type was used on the Winchester Model 1866 Musket. It was produced from 1870 to 1900 (possibly).
Hilt Type #6
This hilt type was used on the Winchester Model 1873 Musket. It was produced from 1880 to 1910 (possibly).
Hilt Type #7
This hilt type was used on the Remington Rolling Block Rifle Bayonet - Feathered Grip . It was produced from 1879 to 1890 (possibly).
Hilt Type #8
This very unique hilt type was used on the Winchester Model 1876 Hawaiian Citizens Guard Musket Bayonet . It was produced in 1882.
Hilt Type #9
This hilt type was used on the Colt Lightning Musket Bayonet. It was produced in 1889 to 1890.
