This single strap black leather frog was made to carry a bayonet or sword with a round or oval frog stud on the throat mount. It was found on a British Pattern 1858 bayonet and appeared to have been together for some time. Whether it was made for a British contract or it was made for a British imported bayonet is uncertain but it is marked with a US name and dated 1865.
It is made from a single piece of leather that was cut to form. A single line was tooled around the entire outer edge of the finished surface. Then the leather was folded over creating a doubled layer. The edges are double stitched to within 55 millimeters the top, leaving it open for the belt loop. The face side of the leather was cut so that the scabbard could fit between the layers to form the pocket. An oval hole was cut to accept the frog stud. The edges around the pocket slot and frog stud hole have been stitched for reinforcement.
The back side of this frog is also black finished leather. It is 205 millimeters long and 80 millimeters wide.
The back of the frog is stamped into the leather, PRATER / NY / 1865.
