Information about this bayonet

There is very little detail available about this vary rare Spanish bayonet.

This bayonet is marked Fca DE TOLEDO in the right side blade fuller and the hilt is very similar to the Winchester Model 1866 Musket Bayonet. The smooth ribbed brass hilt has 16 ribs. There is a forward swept round finial on the bottom of the guard and no finial on top of the muzzle ring. There does not appear to be a blade rivet in the cross guard.

The lug slot's top edges are straight and slightly chamfered. There is no guide slot.

The muzzle ring is about 1 mm above the hilt flat and there is a deep notch cut into the back right side of the muzzle ring to accept the rifle front sight when mounted.

The short yataghan blade has a short deep narrow fuller just below the top edge and a broad shallow fuller just below the narrow fuller.

Jerry Janzen, Bayonets of the Remington Cartridge Period, Page 86, refers to this bayonet as an experimental Remington machete bayonet produced at Toledo in the 1871 to 1872 period.

Speculation and questions

This bayonet hilt certainly looks like the Winchester Model 1866 bayonets. It is enough to make one question if Janzen may be wrong on his Remington connection and to wonder if the hilts may have been supplied by the Ames Manufacturing Company.
