Information about this bayonet
This very rare bayonet is patterned after the saber bayonets that were issued with the British Short Enfield Rifle of that time. The overall length is 724 millimeters. The heavily curved flat back blade has deep fullers and it is 578 millimeters long. The hilt is 146 millimeters long. The pommel and crossguard are made of brass and the checkered wooden grips are fastened to the tang with brass rivets. There is a forward sweeping "cocks comb" finial on top of the muzzle ring and a forward sweeping disk finial on the lower guard. The external steel press stud spring is on the right side of the grip.

The bottom of the muzzle ring is about 2 millimeters above the hilt flat and the diameter of the muzzle ring has not been recorded. The lug slot is not chamfered around the top edge and there is a guide bar slot extending into the wooden grip section of the hilt.

Rare Confederate Thomas Griswold Confederate Saber Bayonet. Brass and checkered wooden grips, brass attachment ring at the cross guard, blade with flat back and curved single edge. Ricasso marked in full, firm stamp “THOMAS GRISWOLD & CO. NEW ORLEANS” in an arch. Blade length – 22 3/4″. Overall length – 28 1/2″. Provenance: Estate of Jim Maconkey, Landrum, SC. Note: This Thomas Griswold Confederate saber bayonet is the single rarest maker marked Confederate bayonet. Only one other marked example is known.
