This unusual brown leather frog was made to carry a bayonet with a frog belt loop on the throat mount. But, it was found with a Sharps Model 1859 - Open Market - Ames with rivet bayonet (ER# 1751) that has a brass domed frog stud instead. It appears to have been worn with this scabbard and bayonet for some time.
The body of the frog is made from a single piece of leather that was cut to form and then the leather was folded over at the top and single stitched along the edges leaving the top 70 millimeters open for a belt loop. The face side of the leather was cut so that the scabbard body could fit between the layers to form the pocket. It has a stud strap stitched on the top edge of the pocket, a stud slot cut below the strap and a rectangular piece of leather stitched below the slot to retain the strap.
This frog is 185 millimeters long and 75 millimeters wide.
The bayonet on which the first example was found.
A second example of what appears to be the same frog was found with a European commercial bayonet, similar to the French Model 1842, marked P.D.L. on the ricasso. Possibly imported to the US during the Civil War.
