Information about this scabbard type
This scabbard type is a post US Civil War production. They are similar to some Type 4 scabbards but the leather bodies are are straight instead of contoured to the blade.
The blade slot in the throat mount is rectangular allowing the blade to be inserted either way.
The outwardly curved edges on the throat and tip mounts are exaggerated to almost a point, making it easy to separated them from the Type 4 scabbards.
This scabbard type was made in the late1860's through the 1870's for the bayonets produced by private contractors.
This scabbard is nearly identical to Variation A except for the frog stud, which is smaller in diameter, more domed in shape and reinforced at the juncture with the throat mount.
This scabbard was made for the Winchester Model 1873 Bayonet and has acceptance markings of a crown over a Gothic letter S on both throat and tip mounts. It has two lines tooled into the leather, running from throat to tip. One on either side of the front face of the scabbard. The tip finial is much smaller then the previous two variations and the rivets are larger.
