A total of 92,807 Model 1841 Rifles were produced between 1844 and 1855 by federal armoires and private contractors. Most were made without a provision for a bayonet until 1854. This rifle would become the basis for the widest variety of alterations of any arm in US military service. A lot of these alterations involved the addition of a sword bayonet. There are many recognized sword bayonet variations that were made for these alterations of which most occurred at the beginning of the US Civil War.
