Type 3 - Variation A

This large 580 mm long brass mounted black leather scabbard is the type found with large bayonets produced by the  Ames Manufacturing Company such as the Sharps Model 1859. 

Type 3 - Variation B

At 520 mm long, this scabbard is a shorter version of variation A and has a prominent cap finial on the brass tip.  It is typically found with early small Ames Manufacturing Company produced bayonets.

Type 3 - Variation C

This  570 mm long scabbard is similar to variation A but the frog stud is flatter and bigger in diameter.  It is found on the New Hampshire Alteration bayonet.

Type 3 - Variation D

This large 610 mm long scabbard has a uniquely shaped tip mount and is used with the US 1861 Whitney bayonet.

Type 3 - Variation E

This large scabbard has a uniquely constructed throat piece.  A brass plate with a hole cutout for the blade is brazed to the top of the throat whereas later models were made by rolling the top edges of the throat mount.  It is believed that this scabbard was produced for the Sharps Model 1853 and Sharps Model 1855 bayonets. 

Type 3 - Variation F

This scabbard is very similar to Variation B except for the rectangular throat opening and the lack of a finial on the scabbard tip.  It is 533 mm long and was found with a Winchester Model 1873 Type 2 bayonet.

Type 3 - Variation G

This scabbard is very similar to Variation H except for the overall length and tip mount construction.  It is 555 mm long and was found with a P.S. Justice Type 2B Bayonet.

Type 3 - Variation H

This scabbard is very similar to Variation G except for the overall size and tip mount construction.  It is 578 mm long and was found with a P.S. Justice Type 2C Bayonet.
