Information about this bayonet
This bayonet has a typical Ames hilt type #1. The smooth ribbed brass hilt is 122 mm long and has 16 ribs. The muzzle ring is flush to the hilt flat and the inside diameter is 22.4 mm. There is a forward swept round finial on the bottom of the guard and no finial on top of the muzzle ring. The press stud and spring are typical Ames construction.

The lug slot is chamfered around the top edge and has no guide slot. There is no blade rivet in the center of the cross guard. So far, the only observed example has been serial numbered on the hilt flat with a large font three digit number.

The left ricasso is stamped with the Ames scroll logo (Ames Logo #4) and dated 1860 on the right.

The yataghan blade is 510 mm long and has unstopped fullers.

Speculation and questions
The early date leads one to consider the Whitney M1841/1855 Derivative Rifle but the muzzle ring diameter is a bit small. Another possibility is the Watertown Arsenal Alteration produced in mid 1858. The muzzle ring and lug dimensions fit but the dates are a problem.

The hilt flat of this bayonet is numbered 107 between the guide slot and muzzle ring in a large font. The left ricasso is stamped with the Ames' scroll logo #4 and dated 1860 on the right ricasso.
