Guiding the viewer's gaze is one method of
capturing their attention.
Cézanne, a master of Post-Impressionism. A close look reveals a space that is unnatural and distorted, deviating from the standard rules of perspective—to the point where one might wonder, "What is the appeal here?"
Cézanne focused on observing his subjects with a cool, analytical eye and striving for superior composition. He employed the abstraction of forms and the blending of multiple viewpoints. This approach expanded the possibilities of expression and established the autonomy of painting, exerting a profound influence on the art that followed—most notably on Cubism, the groundbreaking movement pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Even the methods used today for plaster cast drawing—a staple of foundational art education—are rooted in Cézanne’s teachings.
He is also a master at guiding the viewer's gaze.
The apple in the center takes the lead role. From there, the viewer's gaze travels—first tracing the fruit, then following the movement of the white cloth, and finally moving to the colored cloth. The idea that guiding the eye in a swirling motion is a hallmark of good composition became a widely accepted principle in art education. Furthermore, this follows the same three-layer structure found in landscape painting (where the fundamental rule is to view the scene in terms of background, middle ground, and foreground).
The number three is highly significant in various contexts (though I won't go into detail here): consider the fundamentals of composition—specifically, implying a triangle within the frame (*please read to the end and then take another look at the initial landscape photo and the *Mona Lisa*; the way you perceive them should have changed). Let’s examine this step by step.
The screen is filled with equilateral triangles, making it very stable and symmetrical. Strong → Heavy → Doesn't move. ···. By the way, bilateral symmetry has the connotation of "frontality". In graphical terms, it is called "FRONTAL".

Frontality implies facing something head-on—a sense of "correctness," so to speak. Yet, at the same time, it can also evoke a sense of confrontation or a tense stare-down—creating an atmosphere that feels stifling. The film *The Shining* (1980)—a personal favorite of mine—features a constant stream of symmetrical compositions designed to heighten the sense of dread. It is terrifying yet beautiful; a film well worth watching.
Now, let's slightly modify the triangle.
Rotation, deformation, and asymmetry
Movement emerges.
Focus on the vertices of the triangle
Changing the saturation of 3 points
A visual sequence occurs
Difference in size → Effect of depth
Saturation difference can also be
thought of as aerial perspective.
This is the basis of “pictorial space”
For example, it can be full of hearts of various sizes, it can use numbers, letters, or specific motifs, it can have any color scheme, and it doesn't matter if the white background is visible. It is true that too much freedom can actually seem difficult.
Although this task is a design, it actually requires pictorial thinking. Try adopting the three-layered structure of landscapes and still lifes: distant view, medium view, and foreground.
Do you see triangles hinted at in Cezanne's paintings? The Mona Lisa also has a triangle... Please take another look at the photo at the beginning.
