「地と図」

私たちは白を下地=「地」としてとらえるのがふつうです。上図では黒いかたち「図」= 向かい合うふたつの横顔を見ることができます。一方で余白にもグラスのかたちを見ることができます。黒にも余白にも意味があるけれど、主体はどちらなのか...「地と図」の問題です。

"Ground and Figure"

We typically think of white as the base, or "ground." In the image above, we can see the black shapes, or "figures," of two facing profiles. Meanwhile, the shape of the glass can be seen in the white space. Both the black and the white space have meaning, but which is the subject? This is the question of "ground and figure."

絵画、デザインの構成：「地」も「図」も等価値。意味があろうとなかろうと、常にネガとポジの両方に注目してかたちの調和を実現しようとすることが構成の要です。

Composition of paintings and designs: "The ground" and "figure" have equal value. Whether they have meaning or not, the key to composition is to always pay attention to both the negative and the positive and to achieve harmony in form.
