Ephyra

Phylum: coelentrata

Class: Scyphozoa

Members of jelly fish in the class scyphozoa undergoes a complex life cycle including a larval ephyral stage.

In less than a year the ephyrae mature sexually into medusas.

Although not mature most of the adult characteristics are present in the larval stage.

Body parts such as the manubrium and the arms are common to both larval ephyrae and mature medusas.

The larvae consist of a statocyst for balancing and sensing gravity.

They also possess an ocellus for photo reception.

Food is caught on the tentacles and oral arms by stinging cells called nematocyst.
