Rabbit : Skull

Dentition of rabbit is thecodont, heterodont, lophodont and diphyodont.

Teeth are fixed in sockets of jaw bone, hence dentition is thecodont.

Teeth are three functional type, namely incisor, pre – molar and molar hence heterodont dentition.

Canine is absent hence there is a tooth less gap between incisor and pre – molar called diastema.

Pre – molar and molar have broad crown with sharp transverse ridge, hence lophodont dentition.

Two sets of teeth appear in life; hence it is adiphydont dentition.

The dental formula of the permanent dentition of rabbit is

2.0.3.3 X 2 = 28
