Within UDOT Maintenance Operations, it is important to plan, schedule, direct, and control summer maintenance activities due to the seasonal limitations. Maintenance personnel should have a plan of action for areas or activities that need to be addressed during the summer season. These activities could be a result of a harsh winter, in advance of an upcoming project, to improve safety, maintain areas that could be affected by spring runoff, and address the day to day operations impacting the traveling public including; litter control, carcass removal, drainage, mowing and landscaping operations, and pavement preservation operations etc.
The objective of this chapter is to prepare the maintenance personnel on how to plan, coordinate, prioritize, and carry out Summer Operations. For more details on the work activities see the Maintenance Asset and Activity Handbook. This handbook provides maintenance personnel with work descriptions; general schedule of when to perform activities; and how to enter the material, equipment, labor into the maintenance management system. The Handbook also provides activity codes ensuring costs are captured and categorized correctly. This documentation helps in future planning and the budgeting processes.
