UDOT permit projects often entail plans for future development that will impact state highways as being proposed by third party developers or private citizens. Permit projects may include but are not limited to; adding accesses (right turn, left turn or full access movements), creating turning lanes or developing turn pockets, relocating curb and gutter, and pavement striping.
Permit projects often impact maintenance operations, such as snow and ice removal, by placing additional or new facilities adjacent to the state highway. The region permit offices hold application reviews in which a maintenance representative should review and provide comments back on proposed development plans. The permit application review process also gives maintenance forces an opportunity to learn about new developments and how maintenance will need to address the proposed changes.
Once a permit project has been approved maintenance forces should be aware of when the permit project will begin work and what impacts this will have on their operations. Also, during the course of construction of the permit project, maintenance forces should coordinate with the permit inspector on any issues that arise during construction.
