UDOT has developed the Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP) to provide UDOT employees with a specialized career development and help special crews improve their knowledge, skills, and abilities to increase and provide safety. UDOT Special Crew (TEP) Checklist. The following information provides courses provided by the TEP program along with other third party training that Speciality Crews can benefit from.
Flagging UDOT (ATSSA) - UDOT does not provide flagger training courses directly, these courses are offered by professional organizations in Utah. Please click on the link to learn more: UDOT Flagger Training & Certification
Traffic Control Training (ATSSA) - American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), is the leading certification and training organization for road, traffic and highway professionals. UDOT uses (ATSSA), Utah Local Technical Assistance Program (Utah LTAP), and the Associated General Contractors of Utah (AGC of Utah), to help provide certified traffic control training courses for their employees.
(MUTCD) - Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices is used by UDOT to help employees understand how to identify, install and maintain traffic control devices in a work zone. This class is typically covered for UDOT employees in the (ATSSA) Traffic Control Supervisor certification course.
Barrier/Crash Cushion Training - Is a 2-day training/certification course that teaches the employee the principles of a good barrier system. This training class also provides them with an understanding of UDOT Standard Specifications for proper installations of barriers, crash cushion and end treatments.
Blasting Schools - UDOT holds training/certification classes every 2 years for their certified blasters/avalanche crews.
UAV Training - UDOT policy 01-07 mentions: “UAS may be used when it provides cost efficiency, improved data quality, or improved personnel safety over an existing method or process. Examples of permitted uses include, but are not limited to, aerial photography, photogrammetry, bridge inspections, geotechnical field investigations, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) applications, public outreach, mapping construction sites and conditions, asset management, asset inspections, traffic monitoring, incident management, disaster response, and training exercise.” UDOT crews use these unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for different projects once approved. Certified Crane Operator Training - Some of the UDOT Region Sign crews have their employees trained and certified through CCO (formerly the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) to help develop and learn safe load handling skills. A CCO certification card is issued to those who meet eligibility requirements and pass written and practical exams demonstrating fundamental knowledge and skills in safe operations. This CCO program meets federal OSHA regulations and American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME B30 standards.
(NHI) Training - National Highway Institute provides many different types of training classes for the Federal Highway Administration. UDOT occasionally hosts a Roadside Safety Design (3-day course) typically for their design and traffic engineers. This course is open to special crew employees only that have been approved by the UDOT District Engineer. In this course you learn about the clear zone concept of roadways and how to recognize unsafe elements/features of traffic barriers, signs etc...
Equipment (ASE) Certifications - UDOT equipment operations encourage their automotive repair technicians to participate in The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. This voluntary certification verifies individuals have completed an automotive repair training program and tests to ensure they know how to work on mechanical, electrical, and other automotive systems making the technician more efficient.
Pesticide Applicators license – The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food offer 3-different pesticide applicators license types:
Commercial: applicator makes pesticide applications for-hire (customers are billed or invoiced).
Noncommercial: applicator makes applications of Restricted Use Pesticides as part of his/her job on property owned or controlled by the employer; or for two or more governmental units sharing resources through a joint powers agreement.
Private Applicators (typically farmers): Restricted-Use Pesticide Dealers License.
UDOT no longer requires their employees to possess a Commercial Pesticide Applicators license while spraying on UDOT right of ways unless you are using a restricted herbicide. UDOT typically does not use any restricted herbicides on their right of way. Please check with your UDOT regions, some may use this license as an opportunity to train and educate their employees.
Below is a table that provides a list of training courses that are recommended for specialty crews.
