The Department generates and creates annual standard drawings and specifications that are to be used on UDOT construction and maintenance projects. The goal of these standards is to establish a consistent process for transportation projects to be designed, constructed and maintained. The UDOT standards are influenced from national standards, such as AASHTO, or developed within UDOT to address safety, driver awareness, performance, and consistency for UDOT projects.
Every year the Department updates the Standard Drawings and Specifications according to feedback information solicited from contractors, vendors, suppliers, consultants, and UDOT personnel on the current version of the standard drawings and specifications. The UDOT Standards Committee consists of UDOT department heads, advisory members, an FHWA representative, a contractor representative appointed by the Utah branch of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), and an appointee from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Together, this committee reviews and makes recommendations on changes or updates to the UDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications. Each Standard Specification is to be reviewed approximately every four years.
Current Standard Committee Members List
Currently, UDOT publishes Standard Drawings and Specifications every spring so they are incorporated into the following year's projects.
It is important for maintenance personnel to know and understand the Standard Drawings and Specifications, as these documents provide the guidance and details on how items are to be constructed, what materials are acceptable to be used, and parameters for acceptance of materials provided by contractors, vendors, and suppliers. It is also important to note that all UDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications pertain to all maintenance and procurement contracts unless otherwise specified.
