HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
It was a pleasure to see so many parents and carers in person at last nights’ full Parent Council meeting for a wide ranging discussion on school improvement planning. Our last meeting is Thursday 20 June online.
As well as SQA exams and timetabling continuing pace, it has been a busy few days in school for our junior pupils and those seniors not taking exams.
S2 spent Wednesday participating in multiple team building and communication skills activities organised by the Technologies faculty as part of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and DYW (Developing the Young Workforce) focuses- sorry, education does love an acronym!
Our S4 pupils on the Meaningful May programme have been enjoying trips out of school, such as to the Zoo and Torness Power Station, to find out about job opportunities in those sectors.
The Music Department welcomed a number of The Burgh Primary musicians to record their own version of Blank Space, and the S3 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition are back from the wild where they smiled their way through the rain!
Have a lovely weekend.

S3 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition
The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) pupils braved the elements this week with all members successfully passing the expedition section. On the two-day expedition then groups navigated along the John Muir Way, passing through farmland and along coastal paths with a night of camping at Tantallon. They demonstrated their knowledge and skills in navigation, tent building, cooking and team work and were able to discuss the importance of team work throughout the expedition.
In order for pupils to pass their DofE award they will just need to complete and evaluate the other three activities which make up the award: volunteering (giving up time to help others in the local community), skills (improving a skill or learning a new one), physical (improving fitness levels).
Throughout the year the pupils have learnt new skills (e.g. learning a language, cooking new cuisines), developed existing ones (e.g. cycling, karate), helped their school and wider community (e.g. Shoe Box Appeal, Girl Guides, Library support) and showed tremendous resilience, particularly when the weather declined on day two. A big thank you and well done!
S2 Growth Sector Day
S2 pupils had an action packed Wednesday rotating around different businesses who delivered a variety of STEM learning activities. Thanks to Elaine Gorman for coordinating and all the organisations who volunteered: EDF, SDS, Leonardo, Strutter Aviation, Hyped, Balfour Beatty, Scottish Finance Enterprise, Historic Environment Scotland and the Army.
School Leavers
If your young person is intending to leave school at the end of this term, please remind them they must come to the office to collect a leaver's form. They can do this any time from now on, and the form needs to be returned by May 31st.

S3 YPI Winners 2024
Tuesday was the YPI Final at MGS where the winners won £3000 for their chosen charity. The winning charity was Scottish Women's Aid East and Mid Lothian. The winners visited the charity and interviewed the members of the team. They created a fantastic video showcasing the impact of their services. Well done to the winners and all S3 pupils who took part. The quality was excellent this year and the final was an enjoyable experience for all. A special thanks to Mr Duncan who was the compere on the day. This may have to be an annual occurrence!
MGS/Burgh Primary String Group - Bank Space recording session
We recently invited some young string players from Burgh Primary to join us in recording their own version of ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift. The visit was a part of a transition project aimed at giving primary school students a taste of the music recording experience. The young string players were joined by senior pupils from MGS, who had already laid down a few tracks to guide them.
From the moment they arrived, the pupils were immersed in the process. They received a warm welcome from their studio engineer for the day, Mr Dickson, who guided them through the technical aspects of recording, from microphone techniques to overdubbing recordings. Their string instructor Miss Hill was also with the young musicians in the studio, helping to produce a wonderful recording.
The recording session kicked off with a practice run, allowing the Burgh Primary pupils to get comfortable with the equipment and the space. Nervous giggles quickly turned into confident smiles as the children found their rhythm and started playing like professionals. It was a day of learning, laughter, and music — a day that will undoubtedly be remembered by all who participated.
We look forward to hearing more from these talented young string players in the future and look forward to more collaborative projects between Burgh Primary and Musselburgh Grammar School.
