HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
My week began brilliantly by judging the YPI final and hearing all about the importance of local charities in our community. The groups’ passion for their cause shone through and they had clearly put a great deal of time and effort into the research and presentations. Congratulations to Eleanor and Natalie for winning the grant for the Joshua Nolan Trust.
We really enjoyed meeting the parents and carers of our P7 pupils on Tuesday night in school for the first of our two information evenings, and look forward to meeting more families next Wednesday.
The Youth Games were on Wednesday- I can’t believe we’re in June already!- and it was clear to see and hear how much everyone enjoyed getting together again.
It’s a treat of a long weekend too to finish off a good week in school, and hope you all enjoy it.

Antisocial Behaviour on Buses
I am very disappointed to let you know that I have received a number of complaints regarding the behaviour of pupils on Lothian Buses, and the route between Musselburgh and Wallyford in particular. The concerns include squirting water pistols at each other and passengers, verbal aggression towards the driver and other passengers, and repeatedly ringing the bell. On one occasion the driver had to stop the bus and ask pupils to get off due to unacceptable behaviour. This took some time and resulted in passengers being late for work. We will work closely with Lothian buses to identify these pupils from CCTV for them to pass to police.
Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Final
This week saw the final of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative which our S3 RME classes have been working on. After a fantastic semi-final week the final did not disappoint and each group did themselves and their charity proud! The final charities represented were Carers of East Lothian, Can Do, Changes, Penumbra, Health and Mind and The Joshua Nolan Foundation. The winners of the £3000 grant went to Eleanor Greene and Natalie Smith who championed the Joshua Nolan Foundation, a suicide prevention charity who will use this money to provide bespoke counselling. Thank you to all the judges, the RME department and the Wood Foundation for funding the initiative. The opportunity to raise awareness for each charity and really understand how small, local charities work has been amazing!
House Games
S1/2 have been taking part in House Games this week in their PE lessons. They have concluded the athletics block with class v class competitions in hurdles, relays, discus, shot put and the ever competitive welly boot throw!
All participants get the chance to earn House Points which will be added to the yearly total.
Uniform
We have a small stock of high quality pre loved uniform including blazers, ties, trousers, jumpers etc in school and are looking for more donations of quality laundered items to loan or donate to students. This is to make sure everyone can access uniform and, as importantly, that we take a sustainable approach to clothes, rather than buying everything new. If you have any items that your child/ren have grown out of but that still have plenty of life left in them, please can you hand them into the school office in a bag at any point in the school year.
Reminder: Senior Induction Sessions
To launch the start of our combined S4/5/6 senior phase timetable, we are holding Senior Induction sessions for each House group on Monday 6th June and Tuesday 7th June:
Caird House Monday 06.06 periods 4 and 5
Grange House Monday 06.06 periods 6 and 7
Moray House Tuesday 07.06 periods 6 and 7
Senior pupils should attend school at the normal time for Registration and come to the assembly hall at the times noted. These sessions will establish links for senior pupils across the years, work on expectations for the year/s ahead and help to prepare our young people for life in Musselburgh Grammar as senior leaders in learning for our whole student cohort. Information will also be given out about how to apply for senior leadership positions.
We will return to full school uniform for all learners in August but we are asking that all our senior students do their best to come to school in school uniform in June. Please see the school website for an overview of our uniform code.
