HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
On today’s beautifully sunny Spring afternoon we marked Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. This is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Tom Ferguson (S4) played The East Lothian March and Scotland the Brave on the bag pipes beautifully. Our Head Pupils Emma Dugdale and Nicole Thorburn, teaching colleagues Mrs Walker and Ms McDonald representing Pupil Voice and Eco Club, and our guests, Mrs Blakeley, Co-Chair of Parent Council, Councillor Katie Mackie, and Iain Clark, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian all attended. Iain Clark also said a few words during the ceremony, commenting that this event was particularly important for him as a former pupil of the Grammar.
Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporations is being encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official October to March planting season. With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.
As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 ancient trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.
We were all honoured to represent our school at this historic event which both highlights the importance of our natural environment and celebrates our communities. Our school is committed to sustainability and proudly at the heart of our strong community, so it is a pleasure to have this tree planted here for us. We will look after it for future generations of students and watch it grow, just as our school has nurtured generations of Musselburgh, Wallyford and Whitecraig families for almost 400 years.
The plaque was designed by Mr Mells and Miss Trestrail from our Technologies department.
Wishing you an equally sunny weekend.

School Counselling Service
Hi! My name is Ailsa Hill and I am the School Counsellor for Musselburgh Grammar. The school counselling service is provided by MYPAS which is an organisation that has a variety of services which support young people in East and Midlothian.
I have been in post for over a year but due to the pandemic I have been working from home doing online counselling with young people in East Lothian. I am delighted to be starting working in the school doing face to face sessions and over the coming weeks I will be transitioning into doing increasingly more in-person sessions in school with young people from Musselburgh Grammar.
The counselling service offers blocks of 10 weekly sessions to young people, providing them with a confidential space to talk. I am a person-centred counsellor offering a space for young people to talk in a way that is helpful for them as individuals. For example, some young people may use their sessions to think about themselves and their thoughts and feelings, and others may use their sessions to help them make sense of what may have gone on in their lives in the past, or is going on in their lives at present. I am also running a weekly drop-in session offering 15 minute appointments to young people so they can meet me and find out about counselling and whether it might be helpful for them.
Referrals to the counselling service are, on the whole, made through the young person’s guidance teacher.
I am looking forward to working in Musselburgh Grammar and offering this support to young people.

Today we took part in the Queen’s Green Canopy Tree Planting in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.” Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. This week senior language students have been preparing and sitting their speaking exams. Good luck to everyone still waiting to sit their Spanish, French, German and Italian exams and well done to those who already have! Many S6 students have been working on dissertations and portfolios for their Advanced Higher classes and everyone has been working hard to prepare for exams. We want to remind everyone of the after-school study support that teachers provide. If you do need help in any of your classes then please don’t hesitate to speak to your teacher who would be happy to help.
Due to COVID the school is unable to host a prom for S6 so we have organised one ourselves. We are looking for 5 parent volunteers to assist with the prom so that it can take place. You will receive a three-course meal and a welcome drink at no cost. It will take place on Thursday 9th June 2022 from 7pm. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in helping out. mmccrorie@edubuzz.org
Just another little reminder to say if you have not already done so please go download our school app as it is now LIVE on the app stores to keep up with the latest news in and around school. Again as always thank you to all students for abiding by the guidelines and continuing to wear our face coverings throughout the building and applying hand sanitizer at the appropriate times. We really appreciate you going to these lengths to not only keep ourselves safe but also our staff and families at home too.
See you all next week!
Em & Nic
