HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
Our House assemblies this week introduced the House Captains and focused on the importance of breakfast as a healthy start to the day. Breakfast club is available 8-8.20am daily in the Nurture Room on B Floor.
Next week’s House assemblies theme is the importance of pupils having a voice in our school and how pupils can get involved.
There is much excitement amongst S6 students and staff as we head off to Dalguise for our team building weekend. It looks as though the sun will shine for us, and we’ll keep you updated on our adventures via twitter (not sure I’ll ever be able to call it X)
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Staff
Mr Simpson, who was with us on a temporary contract, has now secured the permanent post with us. The Maths faculty is now fully staffed.
S6 PE, PSE and study periods
A reminder to all S6 pupils that they must all attend core PE and PSE classes as usual as attendance continues to be monitored.
In addition, S6 pupils who have study periods 1 and 2 and/ or periods 6 and 7 should be studying at home. You must sign in at P3 and or sign out at lunchtime.
All seniors are also reminded that study periods during the day are not ‘frees’ and no one should be going out of school during the school day unless at interval or lunchtime.
International Day of Languages
All S2 pupils will be invited to take part in some activities in the hall during period 1 or 2 on Tuesday the 26th of September to celebrate the International Day of Languages.
All pupils who have accepted to help organise the event should come to C05 (Mrs McIntosh’s room) on Wednesday and/or Thursday to prepare their game/activity. Bring your lunch!
Maths Number Buddies
The Maths Department is continuing its excellent peer tutoring system ‘Number Buddies’ this year. Students in S5 and S6 have offered their time to either work in S2 classes or work one to one with S2 students in the library to give them a push with their numeracy. Well done to Mr Devine and the students for this.
Maths Study Support
The Maths department had over 50 students attending study support this week from all different certificate courses. Well done for everyone who attended. As a reminder;
Mr Devine - Monday
Mrs Lyall - Tuesday
Mr Harpham - Wednesday
Mrs McKecknie - Thursday
S1 Maths Smartie Project
The S1 students have been learning about the importance of statistics in their maths lessons since term started. This week and next they have been investigating Smarties and the different colours in each packet!
S1-S3 Dr Frost Maths Homework Help
Dr Frost Maths is the homework platform where the Maths Department sets all homework. Here is a handy video to help use it! It has 83 views so far so I hope it has been useful.
Employability Pathway 2023
Please save the date, all welcome. If you are a business or know of any businesses who would like to secure a spot. Please contact the school or alternatively email, employability@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.
MGS Beekeeping
The bees arrived at school on Saturday! Mrs Watson brought 2 bee hives from New Battle Bee Academy and we also have been reunited with the swarm that Dr Brown and Mrs Dias collected before the summer holidays (Thank you to Mr McGlade at Dalkeith High School for bee-sitting over the summer!). The classes have both been out to visit the bees this week - the seniors had to re-hive one colony and the S3s have been feeding them with sugar syrup to help them get ready for winter. The colonies have had to be left for a week to settle into their new homes and we are looking forward to inspecting them this week.
Future Assets
Two teams of girls have entered this year's Future Asset competition and were at the Competition Kick Start on Tuesday, hosted by Aegon, at the Gyle. The competition aims to introduce more females into the Investment Management sector and is an opportunity for girls to learn employability skills as well as competing nationally against other schools. The teams will have to pitch reasons for investing in a business to a panel of judges in the hope of making it to the final. Best of luck to the senior team of S5 pupils; Eleanor, Rabia, Saja and Niamh and the junior team of S4 girls; Summer, Pearl, Lauryn and Leah. Follow their progress on Mrs Fullerton’s twitter - @MrsFullertonMGS
Spanish Club
The Spanish Club started this week with a great turnout! Everyone was very adventurous trying some foods from Spanish speaking countries. We tried chorizo, Mexican cheese, turrón and pestiños; a pastry from Andalucia. We gave our opinion of the foods in Spanish, with some excellent pronunciation. The club will run every Thursday lunchtime in C7 (Mrs Deary’s room). Bring your lunch along for more fun next week; all welcome!
The Portobello Big Beach Busk
Several of our very own MGS pupils took part in the Portobello Big Beach Busk last weekend! They did a fabulous job and continue to do us proud! All the pupils involved organised their participation themselves and demonstrated excellent independence and professionalism in their performance as they raised funds to help them further their music careers! Well done!

Active Schools
What a great first week of extra - curricular we have had. It has been great to welcome our new S1’s, as well as new and returning pupils! This week we saw the return of Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Girls Football, Hockey, Boys Rugby and Senior Basketball. We also reached a new record at Hockey with 28 pupils attending, a huge congratulations to Mr Devine who takes our team and all our hockey players!
It is not too late to join us either as we still have spaces across our whole programme for new pupils to join. Next week we also have our running club starting up (Tuesdays 3:45 - 4:45 pm) and our much anticipated Boys Football trials;
U14s Monday 4th September 4:30 - 5:30 pm @ Pinkie
U18s Tuesday 5th September 4:00 - 5:00pm @ Pinkie

Can we beat 28 at Hockey?
The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva
Welcome to another edition of ‘The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva’. There have been so many exciting things happening this week that we cannot wait to share with you!
Last Saturday both of us went to the Portobello Big Beach Busk, where Eva was performing as well as Og The Band. We both had a fantastic time watching all the musicians. There was so much talent across the promenade. However, it was very sunny so both Eva and Og got very sunburnt ☀️ It was a brilliant day out and it was great to see some friendly faces from school too!
This week has seen the return of active schools here at MGS! Between the returns of Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Girls Football, Hockey, Boys Rugby and Senior Basketball, the school has seen a brilliant turnout and many of our pupils getting out and getting active!! If you’ve not signed up to anything yet though, don’t fret, there's still plenty of opportunities coming next week for you to get involved in, which will be posted on your year group classrooms!
Also this week, Musselburgh Grammar School became home to our very own swarm of honeybees!! As part of both the beekeeping subject and the wider achievement many pupils including Charlie got the chance to put on the beekeeping suits and get hands-on experience with the hive! We located the queen and transferred all the bees to our very own hive oiled by our own pupils!! 🐝🐝
It's Dalguise time!!! Many of our S6 pupils here at MGS will currently be away at the annual S6 trip to Dalguise! So parents, enjoy the quiet weekend, and for those S6s who are going along make sure to have your fancy dress and Friday night performances ready! 🕺💃
All the photos from Dalguise will be posted on the MGS Dalguise Twitter account so keep an eye on that for everything that we get up to! 📸 👀
The 2024 exam timetable has just been released which can only mean one thing… time to get studying! (not to scare you all)
This week we will have an assembly on the school's pupil voice and how it’s restructuring this year! We will be looking for ~2 pupils from each registration class so if you’re interested, get up and get your voice heard! The MGS Pupil voice Twitter account will also keep you up to date if you have any questions about the upcoming structure change!
We hope you all have a very well deserved weekend!
