School Leavers 24/25
If your young person intends to leave school at the end of the summer term, it’s vital that we have a completed leavers form for them. This is a customised form for each child and needs to be signed off by each of their teachers. This helps us ensure that all units/assessments etc. are correctly recorded for them, as once they are removed from our school roll we cannot amend this.
Due to study leave, school leavers might not return to the building after April 25th, so we need to make sure they know to collect and return a leavers form. If this applies to your child, please send them to the school office to collect a leavers form asap. This must be handed in before they leave.
Staffing
We bid farewell to Mrs Lyall this week after 26 years teaching Maths at the Grammar, and wish her a long and very happy retirement.
We have successfully recruited to Mrs Craig’s maternity leave post commencing August 2025.
Thank You
All the pupils in Support for Learning, Pupil Support, Inclusion and Nurture want to say a huge thanks to Parent Council for buying the Switch for them.
S2 & S3 Trip to Badaguish Outdoor Centre
On the 4th to the 6th of March 12 pupils from Musselburgh Grammar school went on a trip to Badaguish Outdoor Centre near Aviemore to take part in a Winter Residential Adventure Programme.
We experienced communal living and had to make all of our own meals. Activities included using snowshoes and transceivers to find someone lost in a forest where a peer showed the rest of the group how to do CPR. Later that day we went on a night walk without torches through Glenmore Forest in teams to reach Loch Morlich.
The next day we hiked to Glenmore Loge to use the Avalanche Transceiver Park, We split off in pairs and used our transceivers to find ‘a body’ in under 4 minutes which was mimicked by a metal plate. Some teams did this very fast and a pair got it in under 2 minutes! After our stop we walked up to Ryvoan Bothy for a snack and admired the beautiful surroundings.
On our last day we had some time for another challenge! We blindfolded ourselves with balaclavas, got walkie talkies to communicate, and tried to find as many cones as possible. We were in groups of three and one of us could only talk but only see the person in front of us and the other one could only try to act out what the blindfolded person needed to do!
Everyone really enjoyed themselves and we have all learnt valuable life skills. A big thank you to Martyn, Liz and Jamie from the East Lothian Outdoor Learning Service for a fantastic trip.

Beekeeping update
Now that the weather is getting warmer, the bees are busy building up their stores and colonies. The S3 class carried out hive checks this week and found that the hives are thriving! We have recently had a very kind donation from a parent of a hive and beekeeping equipment to help us to expand our apiary. Thank you for your support!
ACS Finalist’s
S2 Business
S2 Business competed in a sustainable competition with ACS Clothing that was open to all schools across Scotland. Pupils had to create an original t-shirt design with a link to the UN’s sustainable development goals.
A massive well done to Zeren and Constance (2P1) who have been chosen as finalists (from over 200 entries!). Both have been invited along to an awards ceremony in May to give a presentation about their designs. Both pupils are in for a chance of getting to work with ACS on an SDG project and exhibit at the Scottish Parliament.
Powering Futures Presentations
Powering Futures is a programme offered to S5/6 pupils in conjunction with industries from across Scotland. It helps pupils to develop the meta skills that businesses are now looking for in their employees such as teamwork, critical thinking and communication. In order to gain the full SCQF level 6 (equivalent of a Higher), the pupils have to present their solution to a challenge which has been set by companies who sponsor the programme. 2 groups presented their ideas to experts from industry at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute and were praised on their ideas, as well as the quality of their presentations and their confidence when presenting to other schools and adults.
Group 1 had to come up with a way to get teenagers in Musselburgh to engage more with nature and away from screens - they planned to set up an outdoor gym near Olivebank.
Group 2 were given the challenge of spending £300,000 over 3 years to provide better services for the community. They chose to set up a hub to provide classes and a social space for teenagers and the elderly to come together.
Well done to all of those who took part!
Intergenerational Wider Achievement Project 2024-2025
Friday the 4th of April marks the final official Wider Achievement visit to the Musselburgh Meeting Centre of this session. A group of senior pupils signed up to the Intergenerational Wider Achievement Project at the beginning of this academic year and have been visiting a group of members at the Musselburgh Meeting Centre every two weeks.
The Musselburgh Meeting Centre is an incredible resource for people who are living with dementia. The centre organises trips and activities for their members as well as offering invaluable support and friendship to all those who attend.
This is the second year that the Intergenerational Wider Achievement group has been running and once again, over the course of this year, we have seen friendships grow between the young people of Musselburgh Grammar and the members of the Meeting Centre.
During the first few months of meeting each other, the young people and members got to know each other over many a cuppa. The members shared their experiences and stories while the young people shared their plans for the future. The group played games, participated in quizzes and completed art projects together which helped them all bond and get to know one another. Since then, the group has done lots of different activities together, some of which included rehearsing and performing as a choir at the Meeting Centre’s annual Christmas party and learning some classic Scottish songs in preparation for Burns Night celebrations!
In November, the group honoured Remembrance Day by placing a display of poppies outside St. Andrews High Church. They also made their own poppy display inside the church by hand making poppies and sharing memories of those who were lost in the war. A joint wreath from Musselburgh Grammar School and the Meeting Centre was placed on the war memorial as a sign of respect from the intergenerational group.
In the new year, the group shared new year's resolutions and talked about the importance of brain health and how to improve it. The group also cleaned up the Church garden and planted bedding plants to brighten things up in preparation for spring! The members even visited the pupils at Musselburgh Grammar School twice! During these visits, pupils proudly showed the members round the building, the garden and of course, the famous beehives! During their visit here, the members learned to play ‘Jolene’ on the ukulele and got the percussion instruments out for a spirited rendition of ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’. A few of the members and young people also recorded an interview for the upcoming MGS Podcast episode (stay tuned…).
Before our young people move on to pastures new, we reflected on all of the good times that we have shared with the members at the meeting centre. One of the volunteers for the centre, Faye Rolland, wrote a beautiful poem to sum up our time together and show the real benefits that come from intergenerational work:
When Generations Meet
Faye Rolland
Things are not always easy
When generations meet,
Their differences seem miles apart
They say ‘metres’, we say ‘feet’!
But when you came to visit us
We soon were put at ease,
You really are good company
And always keen to please.
You are all so kind and caring
And very helpful too,
You always like taking part
In the many things we do.
You’ve taken part in our quizzes,
And you’ve had a go at baking,
You’ve always added on your wee bit
To things that we are making.
When you were playing ‘Kurling’
You were very hard to beat,
Your energy made all of us tired
We all needed to have a seat!
There is no end to what you do
To help us and make us smile,
Whether it’s gardening or birdwatching
You all go that extra mile.
When we visited you at the school
You were all so warm and kind,
We can be a bit slow on the uptake
But you never seem to mind!
One of you, very kindly
Arranged a ukulele lesson,
We managed a note here and there
But never a full music session!
You were all so enthusiastic
But how strange it must have been,
When we all joined in together
To beautifully sing ‘Jolene’!!
There’s so much more we want to say
There’s more we’d like us all to do,
So for now, we send our heartfelt thanks
From all of us to you!!
Pupil Voice
On Monday, Pupil Voice held their 6th and final whole school meeting of the session. Each team reflected on and presented the impact that they have had in school as a group this session. The meeting was well-attended as usual, with teams fiercely competing for the ‘Services to Pupil Voice Award’ at this year's prize giving. A huge thank you to our team leaders: Jasmin Notarangelo, Ella Main, Keira McLennan and Eleanor Greene who have each consistently demonstrated excellent leadership skills, complemented by their dedication and commitment to school improvement through pupil voice. In the same vein, the group were sorry to say farewell to Summer Stirling S6, our head pupil who has had a focus on developing Pupil Voice this year. Summer has been an integral part of leading this cohort and an inspiration to many younger pupils in the school.

SQA Assemblies
Mrs Watson held SQA assemblies this week for all Senior Phase students to talk through all the information they need to know and those us included here for parents and carers too.
Study Support
I am aware that some senior pupils aren't aware of the school’s interactive study support poster so I am including it here again, will email it to all pupils on their edubuzz accounts, and re-post in year group Google classrooms.
E-sgoil is offering revision classes over Easter- more information and to sign up with a GLOW password e-sgoil.com/senior-phase/e…
MGS Easter Revision Study Support
The Easter Revision Programme offered by MGS teachers is now available in pupil google classrooms and on our school website, using the student > study support tab: https://sites.google.com/edubuzz.org/musselburgh-grammar-school/home?authuser=0
Pupils must note that sessions will run from 10am - 12pm and 1pm to 3pm. Pupils must arrive 10 minutes before the session begins to gain access to the building and they must remain for the duration of the study session. Late admission will not be permitted.
SQA Assessment and Assignment calendar
Almost all N5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses require pupils to complete an Assignment, Dissertation, practical performance or other assessment before the SQA exam diet.
These assessments must be completed and deadlines cannot be missed.
To help pupils and parents/ carers see what is required over the next few months and plan out study time accordingly, we have collated these in a spreadsheet for all parents and pupils. This can be found on our website under 'Students', also in 'Musselburgh Learns/SQA' and will be posted in the S4, S5 and S6 Google classrooms - so you can't miss it 😀.
Year group attendance
Improving attendance to improve attainment is one of our school improvement priorities this year and we expect pupils’ attendance to be at least 90%. We are tracking pupils’ attendance carefully throughout the session and more information about our attendance strategy will follow. I hope parents and carers find this weekly update on each year group's attendance useful.
S1: 91%
S2: 89%
S3: 90%
S4: 90%
S5: 92%
S6: 91%

As you can imagine, the end of our last full week at school has a lot of emotions. We are excited to spend a nice, hopefully sunny, day at the Lagoons with our year group this afternoon. This week also marks the end of our time as head team. All three of us have loved our roles and wish the best of luck to our successors!
