HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
This week’s House Assemblies focused on thinking about what our young people want to do when they leave school and the importance of talking through all options with a specialist.
Deciding what you want to do after school can be difficult, but there are so many more options for our young people to explore now than when I was at school. More information on our careers advice service is further on in the newsletter.
We also had another very successful S2 parents evening last night. This year group will be making their subject choices for S3 in the next two weeks so there was lots to discuss with teachers.
This process then leads us into timetabling for 2024-25.
With best wishes for a lovely weekend.
Jodie Hannan

Musselburgh Learns Achieve
Achieve, an online learning resource to support S4-S6 pupils with their National 5 and Higher courses, will be available in the week before the February break.
Mrs Donnelly, CL Technologies, is leading the online demo for parents/ carers and pupils on Tuesday 6 February to support you to help your child.
SCQF Ambassadors
Our SCQF Ambassadors have started their ambassador journey by being present at school events. You may have seen and spoke to them at the Pathways Evening back in November or on Thursday evening at S2 Parent Consultations (you will find them next to our Barista cart).
Their role is to help parents/carers/pupils to understand learner pathways and the variety of courses offered at different levels at MGS. All of our SCQF Ambassadors have different learning journeys, so if you are at a school event they are on hand to answer questions and offer insight into the less traditional courses we offer and the advantages that come from choosing them.
School College Partnership
The College application courses are open on Tuesday 22 January, this is a pathway to academic excellence and personal growth and we encourage all eligible pupils to apply asap and use the support MGS are offering.
To ensure a smooth application process, dedicated support sessions will be held right here at MGS on Tuesdays during Periods 6, Rm A12 and P7, AT1. Additionally, on Thursdays during Periods 4 and 5, the support continues in Room A12.
Please see the attached document and make a start on your personal statement and bring this along as this will speed up the process when you apply.
The partnership between our school and the college is a unique chance for our pupils to access resources that pave the way for a successful academic journey.
SDS
Welcome to Shereen Dalton, our new Skills Development Scotland (SDS) careers advisor. Shereen introduced herself to all pupils at our House Assemblies this week to let them know about the support she offers across all year groups, not just S4-6. Parents/ carers are also welcome to get in touch with Shereen with any queries about their child’s career path.
Dekko Comics Parents (and Staff) Event
We are delighted to welcome Dekko Comics' founder and creator, Rossie Stone, to East Lothian on Tuesday 6th February. Dekko Comics are educational comics that turn school curriculum content (ages 8-12 (P4-S1)) into engaging comic strips, helping pupils to overcome barriers to reading, learning and motivation. For more information, please see: https://dekkocomics.com/
This talk and workshop is based on the fundamental technique on which Dekko Comics is built, which comes from Rossie's experience of struggling at school with dyslexia and low self-esteem, and how he overcame it. This event will introduce the Dekko Technique to parents/carers/staff, hopefully giving an insight into a practical technique which could potentially help your child/young person with their learning. Rossie has spoken to many organisations about his technique, including Dyslexia Scotland.
Where: Ross High School, Tranent
When: Tuesday 6th February, 5pm
If you are interested in attending this event please email ascott@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk
‘The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva’
Welcome to another edition of ‘The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva’. There has been lots going on this week!
There was the S2 parents night on Thursday. Thank you to everyone who helped to organise it, it was certainly very busy.
The National 5/Higher practical music exams are coming up very soon, so make sure to practise during school and to keep it up during the holidays. We know you will all smash them!
There are lots of deadlines throughout lots of different subjects, please make sure you are on top of them all and get them in on time! We know it can be stressful, so please make sure you talk to teachers about any worries or concerns you may have. At the end of the day, they too have gone through exams themselves and know how it can make you feel. So please do not hesitate to reach out to them.
The UCAS applications are due in on the 31st of January, these have to be in by then as university deadlines are very strict. We know that many people have received university offers already which is absolutely fantastic. However, we also know that there are a lot of people stressed as to why they haven’t received offers yet. This is nothing to worry about at all. Universities have until May to make a decision, so you will hear about offers at some point even if it’s not for the next few months.
We hope you have a lovely weekend!
Eva & Charlie
