HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
Dear Musselburgh community,
I hope you had a lovely break and we wish you a very happy 2022.
The pandemic is still very much part of our lives and I will write to all pupils and parents separately about our contingency plans.
School business continues as usual with pupils across several year groups choosing courses for next session, and S4-S6 working towards SQA exams.
Key dates
Monday 10 January: Parent Council online 7-9pm. Please use this link to access the meeting: https://meet.google.com/xzf-cwvc-owj?authuser=0&hs=122
Staffing
We are currently understaffed in Maths by one full time member of staff and although Maths is a national shortage subject, we hope to recruit from the current advert. In the meantime, the timetable has been reconfigured to ensure that all classes are taught by a Maths specialist as much as possible but a degree of non-specialist cover is inevitable. Welcome to Mrs Doherty and Mrs Donaldson, both teachers of Home Economic at Ross High School, who have joined our Home Economics department on Tuesdays and Thursdays until June. Mrs McSherry, Teacher of PE, is still absent and Ms Cutts, supply PE teacher, is teaching Mrs McSherry’s classes.
Have a lovely weekend.
Design & Technology Department
Some excellent news to end 2021 and begin 2022. In December, the D&T department made connections with local engineering company, ZOT Engineering, who have agreed to support us in delivering one of our National Qualifications, Engineering Science. ZOT will also be able to support us as a DYW link, deliver site visits for pupils, offer financial support and provide apprenticeship opportunities, great news for the department and school!
In January, another local company, Howdens, agreed to offer financial support to the D&T department by providing interior furniture that will allow us to make key workshop improvements. The offer from Howdens is an extremely generous one and this support will undoubtedly help improve our four workshops. A good start to 2022! Mr R Thomson
School Lunch Payments at Revalue Machines
A reminder that due to COVID restrictions, we are encouraging less handling of cash within the school. Whilst revalue machines will still be available, we encourage parents/carers to make payments for school meals online rather than pupils accessing the machines in the kitchen.
Payments can be made to Schoolpay via the following link and logging into your account: https://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/schoolpay
Medical - S3 and S4
All vaccination forms to be returned no later than 10th January. Pupils should see Ms Harvey if they don’t have a form. Thank you.
Reminder: School App Launch - January 2022
A new 'School App' is launching in January 2022. This app aims to improve communication between Musselburgh Grammar School and parents and carers. The app is accessible on any device or mobile phone. It will be a convenient way to view and receive important information. More information will be provided next week on how to access, download and use the app.
Em & Nic's Not-So-Secret Diary
Welcome back everyone! We hope you have had an amazing Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Although this week has been short we have been restarting all of our courses in preparation for exams in April. The SQA exam timetable is now out for all senior students so check it out to see when you'll be taking yours. Exams will take place from the 26th April to the 1st June 2022. Since this is the first year that all of our seniors have taken exams please take advantage of the after-school study support provided by teachers.
We just wanted to stress the importance of completing and submitting your UCAS applications once more as the deadline is the 26th January. Many of us have already submitted our applications and are waiting to hear back from our chosen universities. We wish everyone applying the best of luck! Guidance teachers in S6 PSE lessons have continued to assist students who wish to go to university as well as those who are going to college, apprenticeships, or looking for jobs. We are very grateful for the support we are receiving from the guidance department and appreciate how far they are willing to go to ensure that we all reach our deadlines.
Before Christmas we hosted a food bank to donate to the East Lothian Chicken Dinner Boxes. We raised an incredible amount and helped out lots of people in need during the festive period. Thank you to everyone that donated!
Again as always thank you to all students for abiding by the guidelines and continuing to wear our face coverings throughout the building and applying hand sanitizer at the appropriate times. We really appreciate you going to these lengths to not only keep ourselves safe but also our staff and families at home too.
Have a lovely weekend and we will see you all next week!
Em & Nic
