HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
It’s been such an enjoyable first week and we have all been commenting on how positive, cheerful and respectful our young people are. We are gradually getting used to the school roll being a little smaller, and the corridors a little less busy.
As usual, a lot is going on in school, and we welcomed the newest additions to our school roll this morning with over 50,000 bees moving into the apiary this morning. We’re buzzing to have them (I know, sorry)!
Next weekend’s residential to Dalguise is eagerly anticipated by all staff and S6 pupils, and on that note, I now need to find my fancy dress costume!
Have a lovely weekend.
Jodie Hannan

All five will be at Monday’s Parent Council briefing to introduce themselves and we look forward to working with them all this year.

We say farewell and thank you to Mrs Cullen who retires from the office today. Mrs Cullen has been with the Grammar for 13 years, and we wish her all the best for a long and happy retirement.
Key Dates
Monday 28 August: Parent Council briefing online meet.google.com/gzw-gobv-yep.
Mr Harpham, CL Mathematics, will be joining us for part of the Head Teacher report to gather parents’ ideas on how we can support parents to support their childrens’ learning, specifically focused at this point on S1 as part of their transition to secondary school.
S6 PE, PSE and study periods
A reminder to all S6 pupils that they must all attend core PE and PSE classes as usual as attendance continues to be monitored. In addition, S6 pupils who have study periods 1 and 2 and or periods 6 and 7 should be studying at home. You must sign in at P3 and or sign out at lunchtime.
Senior Pupil Induction Sessions
Last week we delivered two sessions to our senior pupils to help them navigate the start to a new aspect of their time in school. We covered what it means to be a role model to others, our values, workload, expectations, the pupil agreement, courses and reporting, careers and pathways and the year ahead, including events and opportunities.
S5 and S6 pupils worked on some team building skills, too.
Many of our pupils demonstrated excellent concentration and engagement and gave us a real sense of excitement for our senior school for the year to come.
“It comes down to this, we are what we do. We are the type of people we choose to be. We show the world who we are by the way we live our lives. By the decisions we make.”

Our Extra – Curricular programme here at Musselburgh Grammar School plays a big part of our pupil’s high school experience and is a great way for our pupils to get active, learn life skills, meet new friends and promote their wellbeing.
We aim to make all of our activities inclusive to all and understand that everyone has differing needs and requirements. We will try to make reasonable adjustments where possible and will always be open to engaging with pupils and parents/carers to ensure this happens.
Our Active Schools Activities are FREE to ALL. To sign up your child to attend any of our activities please see our link below, and our attached QR CODE.

Modern Languages
Unfortunately, Mr Licastro, our new French and Italian teacher at Musselburgh Grammar School, is unwell and has had to take some extended leave from school.
All senior phase classes have been taken over by other language specialists in the department, as have most junior phase classes. However, there are a handful of classes which will be on general cover until Mr Licastro returns. Although this has been unavoidable, the few classes on general cover will receive at least one lesson per week from a language specialist in the department, with consolidation work to complete during their period of cover.
Should you have any queries, please contact Mr Jordan in the Modern Languages department at sjordan@edubuzz.org.
Lost Property
There is a lot of lost property in Ms Harvey’s room. Please come and check if any of these items belong to you.
Medical
Flu vaccinations will take place in October 2023. The dates will follow soon and forms will be issued soon too. Thank you, C Harvey.
