HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
I can’t quite believe that it is December next week, and it will be very busy for our senior pupils as prelims begin on Monday. We know how nerve wracking exams can be, so it’s important that students look after themselves by getting enough sleep, eating well and studying. Remember, success in exams isn’t down to luck but to committing to do the best we can.
We wish you all seniors the best with their preparations, and a restful weekend for everyone.
Jodie Hannan
Key Dates:
Monday 28 November: Prelims commence.
Saturday 10 December: Christmas Fayre 11am - 1pm.

Prelim Arrangements
The prelim exams start on Monday 28th November and last until 9th December. During this time access to the school foyer will be limited.
In the morning pupils will be allowed through the front doors between 8.15 and 8.30am only. Uniform check will take place as normal until 8.30am. Anyone arriving after that point should enter the school building via the white social space doors. Mrs Harvey will be in the social space to issue late slips and uniform slips after 8.30am. Only pupils with prelims will be able to enter school through the front doors after 8.30am.
For the remainder of the school day pupils will not be able to access the foyer (other than to see the nurse or office) – this includes entering and leaving the building through the front doors at break and lunch. Pupils should use the other doors to leave the building. The rules at the back doors still stand – these can be used as exit points; but not entry points at break and lunch.
Some classrooms/ corridors will have NO ENTRY SIGNS during prelim weeks. Pupils should pay attention to those and should not enter these areas.
S4/5/6 should be in classes on the days they do not have prelims. They will be engaging in tasks related to revision and subject learning. If they wish to use class time to study for other prelims that is at their teacher’s own discretion, however the emphasis is on productive work. No pupils will be allowed out to the library/ social space or other such spaces to self-study. We have a number of S4-6 learners who are not doing prelims. They will be completing relevant subject based tasks and/ or unit assessments and should be in classes as normal.

Celebrating Success with QMU
It was an honour to attend a function celebrating success within Queen Margaret University at the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh with Lucy Meldrum who spoke eloquently about her time working with tutors from the Enhanced Learning Tutoring Initiative. Lucy accesses tutors to work on Higher History and Higher English and highlighted the benefits of the programme both academically and socially. Well done Lucy and all the pupils in school who work with the ELTI.
Health and Wellbeing in the Community
The Health and Wellbeing Wider Achievement group have been hard at work over the last term finding ways to support the health and wellbeing of our school community.
Last week, the group met with members of the Dementia Friendly East Lothian group who visited the school for a coffee afternoon. This was kindly provided by the Barista wider achievement group in the school. The pupils and DFEL group members thoroughly valued the afternoon and enjoyed their discussions around what school was like for both parties. The group hopes to meet again in the new year.
For their next venture, the HWB group are creating Christmas Care Boxes for the elderly residents down at Mansfield Court Sheltered Housing. We have joined up with some of the primary schools to create Christmas cards to add in to spread some Christmas joy! Our HWB group will then deliver these boxes to the residents at the end of term.
Therefore, we would really appreciate any donations that you are able to give at this time such as non perishable items, tea, coffee etc- these can be brought to the school office. Below is a QR code that will take you to our Just Giving page for donations as an alternative. Thank you in advance!

Model UN North Berwick
A team of S6 pupils had an excellent experience at the first Model UN Conference post Covid at North Berwick on Friday. The team represented Sweden and found the event to be very positive - saying the experience was “insightful”, “intuitive” and “inspirational”. Mrs Anderson would like to thank those involved for representing Musselburgh Grammar so brilliantly.

Celebrating Success - Mrs Craig
Huge congratulations to Mrs Craig who recently graduated with a distinction in MEd Professional Practice from the University of Strathclyde, which she completed whilst working as an RME, RMPS and Philosophy teacher at Musselburgh Grammar School. The title of her dissertation was, ‘Are you listening yet? An investigation into the impact of lived experience of care in Scottish educational research, policy and practice’. Mrs Craig has been offered and has accepted a PHD place at the University of Strathclyde, which she will complete part time alongside working at MGS.
Physical Education
All pupils/parents/carers are reminded that all pupils must bring PE kit, a full change from school uniform, to their PE classes every time they have PE. This will ensure that they are able to participate fully and to the best of their ability.
Many thanks,
Team PE
