HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
My assemblies this week focused on the power of gratitude, and how focusing on what we are grateful for, can lift our and others’ moods. Even the simplest act of kindness and appreciation for the positives in our life boosts our happiness, reduces our stress and strengthens our connections to family, friends and colleagues. Gratitude costs nothing but is incredibly powerful and creates ripples of joy for other people.
Every Friday morning, the Senior Leadership Team takes time in our meeting to discuss our moments of gratitude and joy in school, and these are always the interactions with our young people: no matter how small or apparently insignificant the conversations or gestures may be, they fill our buckets and boost our mood.
Working with teenagers is amazing!
With best wishes for a lovely long weekend.

‘The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva’
Welcome to another edition of ‘The Wrap up, with Charlie and Eva’, we hope you’ve had a brilliant week and are ready for the long weekend! Now let's get into it!
Prefect applications once again closed yesterday and some great applications have been put forward. We hope those of you who are interested in taking more responsibility this year or the position remembered to apply!
Attention all story writers! A story writing club is opening up in the school soon so keep your ears peeled and ask your registration teachers for more details. This is a great opportunity to meet new people with shared interests and to get involved with an exciting new club here at MGS!
Pupil voice at MGS is waiting on responses from registration classes for two representatives for each class under the new structure. Remember this would only take a double period out from every term, and you still may get in even if there’s more than 2 people applying from your registration class so if you’re interested, apply and get your voice heard!
S6s who are applying to university this year, it might be about time to start putting together your UCAS application! The deadline for a first draft of your personal statement is the 13th October this year, so make sure you’ve got all your references and that you’ve made a start on it. Also any LEAPS applicable young people should find information LEAPS at LeapsOnline about the support they will be offered.
This week's house assemblies were about gratitude, so we would like to end this newsletter by encouraging everyone to enjoy this upcoming long weekend as much as possible and remember to be grateful for the opportunities we have and for people we have around us supporting us. Have an amazing weekend everybody. Thanks for reading this edition of ‘The Wrap up, with Charlie and Eva’, we will see you next week!
ELC Development Plan
East Lothian Council are currently reviewing their Local Development Plan (a 10 year plan used to drive appropriate development/protection through all planning applications), the first stage being evidence gathering and engagement with our communities.
Local Development Plans are relevant to our children in many ways. They are all about the places children will grow up, play, learn, work and perhaps raise their own families one day. Furthermore, the Scottish Government are keen for us to engage with school aged children, making this a statutory requirement on the Local Authority.
As part of our engagement with children and young people, we have created an online questionnaire, this is place based and seeks opinion on a variety of topics that affect our young people – the places and spaces they use, how they move around and climate change. We would love this questionnaire to reach ALL secondary pupils in East Lothian (all age groups): it should take no longer than 10 mins to complete.
The questionnaire is live and will close on Friday 14th September.
Every pupil who completes the survey, and provides their Edubuzz email address, will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 one4all voucher.
The questionnaire is at the link below:

Young Ambassadors
This week one of our Young Ambassadors; Summer Gargaro attended Sportscotlands 2023 Young Ambassador Conference at Tynecastle Park. Where she got the chance to meet other Young Ambassadors from across the East of Scotland, hear from inspirational speakers (Sarah Adlington!!!), share good practice and begin planning ahead for her second year as one of our Young Ambassadors ... watch this space!
At the heart of the Young Ambassador programme is the principle that our YA’s views, and those of other young people are heard, valued and influence decision making; and that they are engaged in driving change. This year we would like to extend our YA team and are looking for two more pupils to join our current ambassador team.
Our Young Ambassador have two key roles:
to promote sport, and motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in a wide range of settings within their local communities, including schools, clubs and community organisations
to influence six key aspects of school sport: extra-curricular sport provision, links to community sport opportunities, opportunities for competition, celebration of pupil achievements in sport, leadership opportunities for young people, PE in schools
As role models and leaders for other young people, Young Ambassadors can have a pivotal role within their school and wider community.
Please watch the video below to see just how the Young Ambassador programme can have an impact on our young people!
Young Ambassadors Programme 2022
All interested pupils should notify their interest with our Active Schools Coordinator Miss Hall. Pupils will be invited to attend a short 15 minute chat with our current Young Ambassadors where they will be asked a couple of short questions. Questions will be given out in advance to allow pupils to have time to think about the impact and difference they would like to make in the role of Young Ambassador.

HWB
S5/6 pupils in the school have the opportunity to take part in a new initiative in school called Mentors In Violence Prevention
Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) is a peer mentoring programme that gives young people the chance to explore and challenge the attitudes, beliefs and cultural norms that underpin all forms of gender-based violence in our society.
Once trained in delivery senior pupils will be going into junior classes to make presentations and stimulate discussion on the topic in order to develop awareness of the issue.
HWB Faculty
PE- The PE dept would like to let all pupils and parents that Crocs are not appropriate footwear for taking part in PE activities, even when in “sport mode”.
Food/Fabric/Care- all pupils are encouraged to take a container into school so that they can put any dishes that they cook in to take home/away after the lesson. This is to help with single use container waste.
