HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
Our Extended Leadership Team met on Wednesday to start discussing our improvement priorities for next year, and it was so good to do this in person instead of online. The buzz of purposeful discussion between colleagues in our team was lovely to see and hear, and I look forward to more of the same with all staff on our Professional Learning (inservice) Day on Monday 23 May.
Our improvement plan for session 2022-2023 will focus on our core business of high quality learning and teaching; ensuring that the courses we offer our young people are what they need for their career after school; supporting pupils’ wellbeing and inclusion; and continuing to create a culture of leadership amongst all staff and pupils to drive our plans forward. I will share more details of our School Improvement Plan (SIP) once it is finalised in June.
Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Dropping and Collecting Pupils
Can I remind all parents/ carers again that the staff car park should not be used for dropping off or collecting pupils, and neither should the area marked with double yellow lines where school buses park. It is causing congestion in both these areas and also on the main road, as well as safety issues for pupils. Please can parents/ carers arrange to collect pupils elsewhere, and staff on bus duty will politely ask cars parked on the double yellow lines to move on. Thank you for your cooperation.
Numeracy Day 2022
18th May 2022 is National Numeracy Day. There will be a challenge for all S1 and S2 students where they will have to find numerical answers across the school, using their answers to solve a puzzle. Also, in maths class around the 18th May, students in S1 and S2 will be entering a National Number Heroes Competition where they have to draw a picture of themselves doing their dream job. They then have to write a description of how they will use numbers in that job. For both competitions prizes are available. Cash vouchers are on offer for the winning National Prize!

PSE Update - Anti Racism
As mentioned in recent newsletters, all pupils have been taking part in PSE lessons regarding racism and language. We have had some excellent discussions in class with many pupils modelling the respectful approach we expect from all. Pupils have shared many ideas on how to be actively anti-racist and we will be exploring these in the coming weeks and throughout next session.
It would be fantastic if some of the conversations about race and being anti racist could be explored and reinforced at home too. Some of these discussions can be difficult and you may feel that you don’t want to get things wrong or say the wrong thing.
The following resources and web links may help parents and carers in these discussions at home:
How to Talk to Your Children About Race
NSPCC Talking to Children about Race
Professor Pragya Agarwal has written a fantastic accessible book for parents and carers “Wish We Knew What to Say – Talking to Children about Race”.
If you would like to borrow a copy of this book please contact:
pupilsupport@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk
If you or a family member are keen to help in future anti racism work at MGS it would be lovely to hear from you. Please contact pupilsupport@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk to set up an initial discussion.
House Points
The staff at MGS are on the lookout for pupils who are demonstrating effort, resilience, quality performance in classes as well as making excellent contributions to lessons in order to give out House Points! Each house point awarded goes towards a running total. The House (Caird, Moray or Grange) and Register Class with the most House Points will then receive a prize at the end of the year! Keep an eye out here for the totals!
Business Bath Bombs
S1 and S2 pupils have been busy this term on their Bath Bomb Project. Pupils in teams have come up with their own brands and packaging for their products. We look forward to their promotional presentations at the end of the month. #businessisthebomb #smellinggood
Parent and carer views sought: Promoting positive relationships and behaviour
This year we are reviewing our policy to support positive relationships and behaviour within Musselburgh Grammar School. Parent and carer feedback is vital and will be considered alongside pupil and staff views in shaping our new policy.
There are 11 multiple choice questions and two open ended questions. The survey will close on Friday 20th May. Click on the link to access: https://forms.gle/vk3oMtfTDkphhSCQ6
All responses will be confidential, unless you chose to leave your details. There is the opportunity to provide your name at the end should you wish or if you’d be willing to take part in a future focus group to discuss.
All responses are warmly received.
Reminder: Immersion Programme for SQA Examinations
A range of supports are in place to help MGS students in preparation for SQA examinations. Our Immersion Programmes are sessions run to support students with revision in school in the days prior to examinations. The dates and times for all of these sessions can be accessed by clicking on the buttons below.
Medical Room
If you are unwell during school time you have to sign out with Ms Harvey in the Medical Room or office if she is not there. Do not text your parent on your own and go home. This is important to sign out with Ms Harvey so we know where you are as we have a duty of care for every pupil in the building.
HPV Vaccinations
Please can all S1 return pink forms ASAP to Ms Harvey. Vaccinations will take place on Wednesday 22nd June and Thursday 23rd June 2022. All S2,and S3 will be vaccinated too.
Thank you, C Harvey
